Custom Metal Parts: Concept to Completion
Every custom metal part starts with a problem to solve. Maybe it’s a bracket that doesn’t exist off the shelf, a housing that needs to fit a unique footprint, or an assembly that has to integrate components no standard part can accommodate.
A full-service fabricator changes the equation.
Metaltech carries a project from that first conversation all the way through final delivery. Fewer handoffs, better communication, faster timelines, and one partner who’s accountable for the outcome no matter which stage the project is in.
Metaltech has been doing exactly that for more than 20 years, giving manufacturers the flexibility to meet exact specifications while maintaining quality and consistency at scale. Here’s what that process actually looks like, step by step.
Step 1: Design and Engineering
Every project begins with a conversation. Some customers arrive with detailed CAD drawings and fully defined tolerances. Others come with a napkin sketch and a problem to solve. Both are equally valid starting points for our Design & Product Development team.
Nothing gets cut until the design works on paper.
Our engineers review your concept and develop a design that’s both functional and manufacturable, weighing material choices, wall thicknesses, bend radii, weld joint accessibility, and tolerance requirements before any metal is cut. This kind of upfront collaboration is one of the real advantages of custom manufacturing, because you end up with parts optimized for your specific application instead of something adapted from a generic catalog design. For repeat production, we maintain engineering drawings and production notes so every run matches the original approved design, lot after lot.
Step 2: Cutting for Precision From the Start
Once the design is approved by the customer, fabrication begins with cutting. Metaltech’s laser cutting operations translate your design into precise sheet metal blanks, handling complex profiles, tight dimensional tolerances, holes, slots, and cutouts of virtually any shape, along with text, markings, and part identification etched directly onto the metal.
Precision fabrication reduces material waste, improves fitment, and minimizes rework. That lowers the total cost of production for our customers.
Step 3: Forming Turns Flat Metal Three-Dimensional
Flat metal doesn’t stay flat for long.
Using a variety of press brakes, our operators bend and fold metal to precise angles, creating brackets, channels, enclosures, frames, and complex multi-bend profiles that started out as a simple sheet.
Forming takes as much skill as science. Our experienced operators understand material springback, grain direction, and tooling selection, all of which determine whether a formed part meets tight dimensional tolerances or falls short. Every part will get a first article inspection to ensure that the part meets the design specifications.
Step 4: Welding for Strength and Precision
Metaltech’s AWS-certified welders join parts using both MIG and TIG processes, choosing manual welding for complex or lower-volume work and robotic MIG welding for high-volume, consistent production runs. According to Cutting Edge Steel, robotic welding improves accuracy and consistency, cutting down on errors and strengthening part performance.
Weld quality is verified through visual inspection and, where required, additional testing to applicable standards.
Step 5: Machining Adds What Fabrication Alone Can’t Produce
What happens when a part needs more than sheet metal can deliver?
Some assemblies require features that sheet metal fabrication alone cannot produce, including threaded holes, precision-bored surfaces, and close-tolerance mating features. Metaltech’s CNC and manual machining capabilities complement our fabrication operations, letting us add those features to a part without sending the work outside our facility. That keeps your project under one roof and on schedule.
Step 6: Powder Coating Protects and Presents Your Part
A well-fabricated part still needs the right finish.
Metaltech’s powder coating system applies durable finishes in virtually any color, texture, or gloss level, and it handles parts up to 26 feet long, which covers even the largest custom components.
Powder coating provides a durable, attractive finish and, when properly specified and applied, can offer excellent adhesion, corrosion resistance, UV stability, and impact resistance.
Step 7: Assembly and Delivery
The last step is getting finished parts into your hands, ready to install. Many customers take advantage of Metaltech’s assembly services to receive fully pre-assembled components, spanning electronics, hydraulics, hardware installation, and enclosure assembly. This reduces your labor costs while supporting consistent build quality on the finished product.
Delivery options include regional service within 300 miles of our Lebanon, Missouri facility, LTL freight for customers farther out, and drop-ship capabilities for direct delivery to your customers or job sites.
Quality Control Throughout the Process
Quality control isn’t an afterthought at Metaltech.
As an ISO 9001 certified shop, our quality management system is built into every stage of fabrication, not applied only at the end. Dimensional checks, weld inspections, and finish quality reviews occur throughout production, not just before a part ships.
That’s what separates custom fabrication from generic alternatives, and it’s exactly how Metaltech operates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a typical project timeline from quote to delivery?
Timelines vary significantly depending on project complexity, quantity, and material availability. Straightforward parts with an existing design can move quickly from quote to delivery, while complex new designs that require engineering development and first-article approval take longer. Contact us early in the process for the most accurate estimate.
What design support do you offer customers who don’t have finalized blueprints?
Our Design & Product Development team can work from a concept sketch, a sample part, or even just a description of what the part needs to do. We’ll develop manufacturable drawings for your review before production begins.
How do you handle quality control throughout the fabrication process?
Quality control is systematic and documented at every stage, from first-article inspection through final review before shipment.
What makes Metaltech’s process different from other fabricators?
Metaltech’s full-service capabilities, including design, laser cutting, forming, CNC machining, welding, powder coating, and assembly, all operate under one roof in Lebanon, Missouri. That matters more than it might sound like on paper. Fewer handoffs mean faster communication between production stages, and having one partner accountable for your entire project, rather than juggling several vendors, tends to save time and prevent costly miscommunication down the line.
